What to do after a breakdown: a calm, step-by-step guide

A breakdown is stressful, but the first few minutes are mostly about safety, not mechanics. Here's a calm order of operations for the moment your vehicle quits โ€” on a surface street or a busy highway.

1. Get out of the flow of traffic

If the car is still rolling, coast toward the right shoulder, an exit, or a parking lot โ€” anywhere out of live lanes. Straighten the wheels, put it in park (or in gear with the brake for a manual), and set the parking brake. Don't try to push a stalled car across lanes yourself; getting it fully off the road can wait for the pros.

2. Make yourself visible

Turn on your hazard lights immediately โ€” day or night. If you have a reflective triangle or flares and it's safe to place them, set them 10โ€“20 feet behind the vehicle. At night, an interior dome light on helps other drivers see you.

3. Decide where you'll wait

On a quiet street, staying buckled inside the vehicle is usually safest. On a highway shoulder, the vehicle can be the most dangerous place to sit โ€” if you can get everyone out on the side away from traffic and stand behind a barrier, do that. Trust your read of the situation.

4. Have these ready before you call

  • Your location โ€” a mile marker, exit number, cross street, or a pin from your phone's map.
  • Your vehicle โ€” year, make, model, and whether it's front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive.
  • What happened โ€” won't start, overheating, flat, accident, stuck, out of fuel.
  • Where you want it towed, if you know (home, a shop, the dealer).

Having this ready means a faster call and a more accurate price and ETA up front.

5. Wait smart

Keep your phone volume up โ€” your provider may call to confirm your exact spot. Don't accept help from unrequested trucks that just show up; confirm the provider matches who you called. If your situation changes (you feel unsafe, someone's hurt), call 911 first.
