A breakdown is stressful, but the first few minutes are mostly about safety, not mechanics. Here's a calm order of operations for the moment your vehicle quits — on a surface street or a busy highway.
If the car is still rolling, coast toward the right shoulder, an exit, or a parking lot — anywhere out of live lanes. Straighten the wheels, put it in park (or in gear with the brake for a manual), and set the parking brake. Don't try to push a stalled car across lanes yourself; getting it fully off the road can wait for the pros.
Turn on your hazard lights immediately — day or night. If you have a reflective triangle or flares and it's safe to place them, set them 10–20 feet behind the vehicle. At night, an interior dome light on helps other drivers see you.
On a quiet street, staying buckled inside the vehicle is usually safest. On a highway shoulder, the vehicle can be the most dangerous place to sit — if you can get everyone out on the side away from traffic and stand behind a barrier, do that. Trust your read of the situation.

Keep your phone volume up — your provider may call to confirm your exact spot. Don't accept help from unrequested trucks that just show up; confirm the provider matches who you called. If your situation changes (you feel unsafe, someone's hurt), call 911 first.
